It was a cool night, and Alice was walking home from work as she always did. Loving the night’s sky, the due drops forming on the grass because of the cold. Embracing the noises around her, and the fact she only had the moon, the stars, and the occasional streetlight to guide her way. She always liked her walk, but not tonight. Tonight she did not like her walk at all.

Suddenly something swooped at her from behind. She realised that, although she hadn’t seen what the thing was, the experience left her terrified. She stood still, her mind grappling with the possibilities: bat; owl; some kind of night bird. Yet her senses told her that what she had heard and felt was much bigger than any of these.

Alice quickened her pace. The night around her no longer made her feel safe and content, now it made her just want to get the hell out of there. To be inside her house, under the covers, safe with all the doors and windows locked. But her feet were not getting there fast enough, and she felt the thing swoop at her again. She gave out a frightened cry as it pushed her to the ground.

She tried to remember her judo training but fear was paralysing her and the thought of what could happen to her next appalled her. She remembered a prayer her grandmother had taught her and began whispering the words – “Hail Marry, full of Grace; the Lord is with you. . .” Before she knew it the weight of the dark figure abruptly disappeared. She rose to her feet and as she did she heard something drop off her clothing. It sounded like trickling sand. So she reached down and pressed her fingers into a pile of black crystalline sand.

She ran all the way home. When she got there, the house was dark and she remembered her parents were out.

Bits of the black shiny stuff dropped to the floor as she flooded the room with light. She heard a crackling sound behind her and watched as the dark substance began to re-materialise.

She had no idea what it was, but its claws and teeth that shone in the light, made her scream as she looked at its grotesque body. It moved towards her and picked her up in its huge hands.

It is said that the whole street could hear her screams. The police tried for ages to work out what had happened to the girl, but they could never find her body. The only clue they had was drops of her blood left behind on the floor, and specks of shiny black sand. . .
This is a Jazz and Gillian thing. Done a very very long time ago. We each did sections of it each. One after the other. I did the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 8th paragraphs. Gillian did the rest.

Hope you like it.
